OVER-THE-COUNTER COUGH MEDICATIONS

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

When you go to the drugstore to select an over-the-counter preparation to treat your cold or flu, you’ll encounter a dizzying array of liquids, lozenges, pills, and potions to choose from.

Buy a cough medication with an expectorant if your cough is thick and phlegmy. Drinking lots of fluids also helps, as does avoiding dairy products, as they seem to make secretions thicket. Cough suppressants are primarily for dry, hacking coughs that only irritate the throat and lungs more. In this case, it’s also important to keep your throat well lubricated to cut down on the cough. When buying a cough syrup, you should also choose one that doesn’t contain alcohol. If you’re diabetic, you need to take a sugar-free formulation. If you need help, ask your pharmacist.
